Year 1- Autumn Term -2016/17

Miss Turner's Class and Miss Rowles' Class Webpage

We have had a very busy and fun packed half-term! The children have all worked extremely hard especially with our Christmas Nativity, we hope you enjoyed it. All of the children should be very proud of themselves and their involvement in the production. We have had the opportunity to watch the Nursery and Reception children perform their Christmas Nativity production too.

Christmas Party Day - 12th December

We had an amazing time at our Christmas party! All of the children looked great in their party clothes. We played lots of games and enjoyed sharing our party food. We also had a wonderful time drinking hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows on an open fire with Mr Flynn and Mrs Whelan in the zen area.

This week we have been writing letters to Santa, shared our Christmas wishes and sewed our own felt Christmas tree decoration!

KS1 Halloween Disco- Friday 21st October

History and Design Technology Day- 4th October 2016

Today we have been learning about Florence Nightingale, a famous nurse who helped many soldiers in the Crimean War. We learnt about Florence's life and the things that she accomplished. Look at our photo slideshow to see what we got up to...

English- Owl topic

In our English lessons we have started to focus on stories with familiar settings by beginning with the story of ‘Owl Babies’. The children have acted the story out, written about their favourite part of the story and described the characters and setting. Look at our photos! There are lots of other interesting English tasks on offer too to reinforce and consolidate our learning from Reception.

English-Hedgehog topic

We have been learning lots about hedgehogs. We read 'Hedgehog's Balloon' from the Percy the Park Keeper story set and then we used non-fiction books to learn facts about hedgehogs. Did you know that hedgehogs are good swimmers? Have any hedgehogs visited your garden recently? Perhaps you could leave some cat food and milk for them. In our English lessons we have been working on our sentence structure; we made clay hedgehogs and were challenged to use tweezers for moving the matchsticks and googly eyes; we used a given set of magnetic letters to build as many words as we could; we created leaf hedgehogs and we labelled the body parts of a hedgehog. Look at our wonderful photographs here.

We have been learning to count aloud in twos and fives. The Year 1 children have been thoroughly enjoying counting along with these songs below.

In Maths we have been focusing on developing our counting skills, building on what we learnt in Reception. We have been counting aloud to 100 and beyond. We have been ordering numbers, looking at teen numbers and constructing our own number lines. We have also learnt to count sets of objects accurately using the touch, move and count method.

We have introduced our topic ‘Ourselves’. Firstly the children looked at their own and their partners face, drawing the key features and talking about similarities and differences. They then learnt about different emotions and how these are shown by facial expressions. We discussed how and why we might express a range of emotions. Our teachers drew around somebody in our class and we had to label the main body parts. We talked about what our body parts do and then we learnt about being healthy. Lots of children in our classes have lost their teeth lately! We talked about the amount of sugar in different drinks and watched a video clip about going to the dentist.

Children In Need Day - 18th November 2016

What a fabulous time the children had wearing their own clothes! The children brought in donations to raise money for children who are less fortunate . We have many kind and thoughtful children in our school. Thank you once again to all parents for supporting this special day.
